Vintage Persian Mahal/Sultanabad Rug, West-Central Iran, circa Mid 20th Century
Set on a warm brick-red ground, this piece carries the loose, oversized palmette-and-vine pattern typical of the Mahal and Sultanabad weaving districts, where designs were drawn larger and more open than the tighter florals of city workshops like Kerman or Kashan. The soft ivory, dusty blue, and sage accents against that red field give it real presence without feeling too formal — these rugs were originally woven with an eye toward the Western export market, which is part of why the scale reads so well in a room today.
